Polar explorers launched more than 60 radio probes at the Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadskyi" and received unique data for world science.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by the Ministry of Education and Science.

Launching the radiosonde

"In 2022, an exceptional international initiative began - the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP), which was carried out all over the world. The mission of YOPP is to improve the forecasting capabilities of atmospheric conditions for the polar regions and beyond," the message reads.

Preparation before launch

Despite the full-scale war, Ukraine actively joined the initiative. For the first time in the history of Ukrainian Antarctic expeditions, meteorologists began continuous research of the atmosphere with the help of radiosondes.

In addition to "Akademik Vernadsky", radio sounding of the atmosphere was carried out at 23 Antarctic stations belonging to 13 countries (Argentina, Australia, Chile, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Portugal, Great Britain, USA).

In total, during the monitoring period, 609 radiosondes were launched from all stations, 63 of them were launched specifically by Ukrainian scientists from "Vernadsky", and this is a rather large share, almost 10%.

The event is extremely important, because each successful flight of the probe made it possible to obtain unique data, which are now being studied by scientists from all over the world.

Currently, the provided information is used to improve the weather forecast in the region of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Also, with the help of these data, the vertical distribution of various atmospheric characteristics and their changes will be studied.

The Ministry of Education noted that, despite the difficult situation in the country, Ukrainian polar explorers actively participate in important international projects and create global science.

As reported by Ukrinform, the number of penguins near the Ukrainian station "Akademik Vernadskyi" in Antarctica has increased significantly, polar explorers have to dig trenches in the snow so that the penguins cannot surround the station.
