During preparations for the construction of a new airport near the Cretan city of Kastelion, archaeologists discovered a large circular stone structure with an area of 1,800 square meters. Its age was estimated at 4000 years.

The Greek Ministry of Culture has already called the new find "unique and extremely interesting." The stone labyrinth was probably built by representatives of the Minoan civilization of Crete, known for its exquisite palaces and masterful frescoes.

The structure, surrounded by eight stepped stone walls up to 1.7 meters high, had a complex internal structure divided into small interconnected rooms, probably crowned by a low conical roof.

Archaeologists assume that the room was used for various ritual ceremonies, as many animal bones lay in it.

The stone structure was mainly used in the period between 2000-1700 BC. It was built around the same time as the first palaces of Crete, such as Knossos and Festos.
