O.Ya. Usikov Institute for Radiophysics and Electronics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

In accordance with the decision of the Council of Ministers on September 30, 1955, the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR was organized in Kharkiv. The organizer and first director of the Institute was O.Ya. Usikov, elected academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in 1964. The Institute was formed on the basis of the departments of electromagnetic oscillations and radio wave propagation of the Kharkiv Physics and Technology Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR with the aim of practical development of a large part of the spectrum of electromagnetic waves (including millimeter and submillimeter). Over the time that has passed since its foundation, the Institute has become a widely known leading scientific center that determines the level of world and national scientific achievements in the field of radiophysics, electronics, radiophysical studies of solid bodies and biological objects, radio wave propagation, and remote sensing of the Earth's natural environment from aerospace carriers. The development of the Institute is associated with the names of outstanding scientists who worked in it. Among them, of course, those who left a noticeable and recognized contribution to science by the broad scientific community are P. V. Bliokh, S. Ya. Braude, O. O. Galkin, V. P. German, M. S. Zinchenko, A. I. Kalmykov, E. A. Kaner, E. M. Kuleshov, G. Ya. Levin, I. E. Ostrovsky, S. A. Peskovatskaya, V. G. Sologub, I. D. Truten, I. S. Turgenev, O. Ya. Usykov, V. P. Shestopalov, V. M. Yakovenko and others. Thanks to their creative potential, selfless service to science and organizational activities in various branches of modern radiophysics and electronics, a complex of theoretical and experimental research was carried out, teams of highly qualified specialists were trained.
