Institute of Cell Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

The Institute of Cell Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is a leading research institution in the fields of cell and molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, and biotechnology. As of the end of 2024, 49 staff members are involved in research activities at the Institute, including 43 researchers.

The scientific capacity of the Institute includes one Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and three Corresponding Members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Among the researchers, 71 percent hold a scientific degree, including 12 Doctors of Sciences and 23 Candidates of Sciences (PhD), while 26 percent hold an academic title. Research activities are conducted within two strategic research areas: molecular genetic and biochemical mechanisms regulating yeast metabolism and the development of biotechnological processes, as well as molecular mechanisms regulating proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis in normal and tumor cells of animals and humans.

The Institute comprises four research departments and a Shared Research Facilities Center, which provides access to modern analytical and bioanalytical equipment and supports interdisciplinary research. The Institute maintains unique collections of permanent cell lines and microbial strains, which are actively used in both fundamental research and applied developments.

In recent years, the Institute’s researchers have completed more than 190 research projects, implemented over 25 international projects in collaboration with partners from eight countries, and introduced dozens of developments into biotechnological and medical diagnostic practice. The Institute provides training for Doctors of Philosophy and Doctors of Sciences and ensures the integration of fundamental research with practical applications.
