Department of National-Patriotic Education

The Department of National and Patriotic Education is a scientific structural unit of the Institute of Educational Problems of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine. The Department was established in 2025. Prior to that, the unit had different names over the years:

1991–1994 – Laboratory of Moral Education;

1994–2015 – Laboratory of Moral and Ethical Education;

2015–2019 – Laboratory of Civic and Moral Education;

from 2020 – Laboratory of Moral, Civic, and Intercultural Education;

from 2023 – Laboratory of National and Patriotic Education;

from 2025 – Department of National and Patriotic Education.

The purpose of the Department’s activity is to foster a responsible patriot-citizen who is ready to serve the Ukrainian people, defend the territorial integrity of Ukraine from the aggressor, and unite for the common goal of post-war reconstruction and renewal of Ukraine based on national values.

The key tasks of the Department include:

enhancing the status of national and patriotic education in Ukrainian society in general and in the education system in particular;

strengthening and developing the educational functions of educational institutions, expanding the circle of subjects involved in national and patriotic education, and improving coordination of their efforts;

making more effective use of national traditions, modern global and domestic pedagogical experience, and research in psychological and pedagogical sciences in the field of national and patriotic education;

orienting the educational systems of institutions toward recognizing the priority of national and patriotic education of the individual;

ensuring interaction between the education system and all social institutions to intensify the process of national and patriotic education;

fostering respectful attitudes toward the growing individual in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child;

strengthening the role of the family in national and patriotic education of children and enhancing its cooperation with educational institutions;

revitalizing, on new theoretical and technological foundations, the system of extracurricular and out-of-school national and patriotic education for children and youth;

promoting the digitalization of national and patriotic education for school and university students;

supporting the development of children’s and youth civic organizations as centers for cultivating patriots of Ukraine;

contributing to the further democratization of the management of national and patriotic education for school and university students.
