The Department of Surgery and Transplantology was founded in 1955.
At different times, the heads of the department were such prominent surgeons-scientists as M. M. Amosov, O. O. Shalimov, S. O. Shalimov, V. F. Saenko, B. S. Polinkevych, Yu. V. Polyachenko.
Since 2015, the department has been headed by the Director of the State Institution "National Scientific Center of Surgery and Transplantology named after O. O. Shalimov" of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences. Professor Oleksandr Usenko.
The department conducts training of interns, specialization cycles in the specialty "Surgery", "Transplantology", "Vascular Surgery", cycles of thematic improvement in laparoscopic surgery, modern issues of liver and biliary tract surgery, bariatrics, surgical infection, angiography and X-ray endovascular surgery,
All teachers of the department are experienced teachers, surgeons of the highest qualification category, who are actively engaged in medical and diagnostic work in the clinic.
In the educational process, the department's staff widely uses modern teaching technologies: Computer technology, videos, multimedia programs, heuristic methods, situational tasks, standards of practical skills.
In 2021, the scientific theme of the department was approved:
"Latest technologies in the surgical treatment of multifocal atherosclerosis and its consequences." The main directions of the department's scientific activity are the development of new and improvement of existing methods of diagnostics and surgical treatment of diseases of the digestive tract, liver, bile ducts and pancreas, heart, aorta and major vessels, pathological conditions requiring microvascular and plastic interventions, as well as transplantation of organs and tissues (liver, kidney, etc.). The department's staff implements new methods of prevention and treatment of postoperative complications, problems of hospital infection.
