Potapov Oleksandr Oleksandrovich was born on January 12, 1962.
In 1985, he graduated with honors from the Ivano-Frankivsk Medical Institute with a degree in “medical practice”. In 1987, he completed a specialization in neurosurgery at the Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Doctors. He worked as a resident in the neurosurgery department of the Sumy Regional Hospital.
In 1989-1991, he studied in clinical residency, and then in correspondence postgraduate studies at the Kyiv Research Institute of Neurosurgery.
In 1992, he defended his PhD thesis. Since 1995, he has worked as an assistant, then as an associate professor at the Medical Faculty of Sumy State University. In 2001, he was awarded the academic title of associate professor.
In 2002, after defending his dissertation, he was awarded the scientific degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences in the specialty "Neurosurgery". The academic title of Professor was awarded in 2004.
Since 2005, he has headed the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurology of the Medical Institute of Sumy State University. He headed the University Clinic of Neurosurgery, which is located on the basis of the Sumy Regional Clinical Hospital. He has the highest qualification category of a neurosurgeon. In the clinic, he performs operations on craniocerebral trauma and its consequences, spine and spinal cord injuries, peripheral nerve injuries, brain and spinal cord tumors, hydrocephalus and malformations of the nervous system, discogenic radiculitis. He conducted medical conferences, rounds, clinical investigations in hospital departments, as well as consultative work in city and regional medical institutions. Organized work on the introduction of the latest medical technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with neurosurgical pathology into the educational and medical process in the Sumy region, improving surgical interventions in this regard.
In 2017, he was awarded the honorary title of “Honored Doctor of Ukraine”.
For many years of conscientious work and high professionalism, he was awarded the Honorary Award of the Sumy City Council “For Services to the City” of the 2nd degree, Honorary Certificates of the Head of the Sumy Regional State Administration and the Department of Health of the Sumy Regional State Administration.
Since 01.10.2025, he has been a professor at the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery of the IFNMU.
He is the author of more than 200 printed scientific and educational and methodological works, including in foreign publications and publications indexed in the Scopus and WoS databases, monographs and textbooks. Currently, he supervises the scientific work of two graduate students. Under his supervision, a candidate's thesis and a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy were defended.
