On November 9, 2023, the results of the selection of projects for the creation of German-Ukrainian Centers for Advanced Research were approved.

This took place during the 14th meeting of the Ukrainian-German working group on scientific and technological cooperation in Germany. Ukraine was represented at the meeting by Deputy Minister of Education and Science Denis Kurbatov and Acting Director General of the Directorate of Science and Innovation Grygoriy Mozolevich.

In the competitive selection of 2023, 4 projects emerged as winners. They received financial support from Germany for further development, with a total funding of 10 million euros. The centers will operate under the leadership of leading German and Ukrainian scientists.

  1. The Center for Advanced Research of Natural Compounds (CENtR) is planned to be located in Lviv. Scientists there will work on strategies for the discovery and medical application of new bioactive anti-infective agents.
Main partner in Germany: Helmholtz Institute of Pharmaceutical Research (Saarland). Main partners in Ukraine: LLC "Explogen" and Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
  2. The Center for Advanced Research on Quantum Materials (GU-QuMat) will be built in Kyiv. Its focus will be on the search for new quantum materials and their functionality as a platform for future technologies.
Main partner in Germany: Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research (Dresden). Main partner in Ukraine: Kyiv Academic University (KAU).
  3. The Center for Advanced Research in Plasma Technologies (PLASMA-SPIN-ENERGY) will be located in Kharkiv. Its goal is to use plasma technologies for the production of spintronic components, which are a promising basis for next-generation computers.
Main partner in Germany: Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics (Munich). Main partner in Ukraine: V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
  4. The Center for Advanced Research in German-Ukrainian and European History of the 20th Century (EUU20) will study the governance of two major criminal regimes in European history of the 20th century — Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during Stalin's times. The center will be established in Lviv.
Main partner in Germany: Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Main partner in Ukraine: Ukrainian Catholic University.

Thanks to these projects, Ukrainian students, postgraduates, and scientists will have access to international levels of knowledge and research, modern scientific infrastructure, contributing to the further development of education and the scientific and technical sector in Ukraine.
