Kaling Prize for the Popularization of Science

Until July 30, 2023, UNESCO is accepting applications for participation in the competition for the 2023 Kaling Prize for the Popularization of Science.

The Kalinga Prize is the oldest UNESCO prize, established in 1951. It is awarded to individuals, institutions, and organizations that have dedicated their careers to interpreting science, research, and technology for the public.

Requirements for candidates:

  • Candidates must make a significant contribution to the popularization of science, create a way of spreading scientific knowledge and be deeply aware of the role of science in society.;
  • candidates do not have to have a scientific degree;
  • the prize is not awarded for research or study (at a school/university), curriculum development;
  • if the work to be awarded is carried out by two or three persons, the prize shall be awarded jointly to them, but may not be shared by more than three persons.

The award consists of a prize of USD 45,000, a certificate and a UNESCO silver medal. The winner will also be invited on a tour of India (travel and accommodation at the expense of the Government of India) to communicate with scientists, visit universities and meet scientific societies, including the Indian Science Congress Association.
