The research icebreaker 'Noosphere' with the team of the 28th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition arrived at the 'Akademik Vernadskyi' station. This was reported by the ship's captain Oleksandr Hryshko on March 27, 2023.
The journey from the Chilean port of Punta Arenas to the station took 5 days.
In the coming days, the unloading of the ship and the change of annual expeditions will continue. Scientists and specialists from the 27th UAE, who worked on the 'Vernadsky' for a year, will hand over their work to their colleagues from the 28th Antarctic expedition.
After that, the traditional handover of the station between the expeditions will take place—the winterers of the 27th UAE will go home, and the participants of the 28th will stay to work for a year.
Among their main tasks will be measurements and research in three areas:
As well as supporting the life of the station.
Currently, the Ukrainian icebreaker is working in Antarctica for the second season. At the end of December 2022, he left South Africa for King George Island, where he delivered an expedition and cargo for the Polish Antarctic station 'Artstowski'. From there, the ship arrived at 'Vernadsky', delivering the participants of the technical seasonal expedition, who are currently completing urgent work on the modernization of the station. Therefore, 'Noosphere' reached Chile and waited for the team of the 28th UAE, with which it successfully returned to the Antarctic.
