The photo exhibition 'Ukrainian Antarctic Research and Resistance' was opened at the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels. It began on December 13, 2022, with the participation of the European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Virginias Sinkevichyus, Director of the National Antarctic Scientific Center Yevhen Dyky and Deputy Representative of Ukraine to the EU Serhiy Tereshko.

The exhibition presents 40 photos about the history and modernity of Ukrainian research in the Antarctic, the unique nature of the icy continent. A special place in the exposition is occupied by two collages, created especially for the event in Brussels: from photos of the office of the National Academy of Sciences, crushed by a Russian rocket in the center of Kyiv, and Ukrainian polar explorers who joined the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend Ukraine.

'Currently, scientists in Ukraine live in two different centuries. One is the 21st century, in which we are concerned about climate change and joint research in the Antarctic. The rest is from the 20th century, and maybe even earlier. In it, we are forced to defend our land in a bloody, barbaric war with the Russians, to survive without light and heat. The question of what century humanity will continue to live in is being decided now in the trenches in Ukraine. This is exactly the opinion we wanted to convey with this exhibition,' said Yevhen Dykiy, director of the National Academy of Sciences.

In addition to the photo, in the exposition you can see the Ukrainian flag flying in the Antarctic winds, with the signatures of the participants of the 26th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition.
'The war in Ukraine, Bucha and Irpin are much closer to the European Union than it might seem. They are located at the same distance from Brussels as Athens. The same with Antarctica. It seems very far away, but at the same time, the processes taking place there affect all of us,' said European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius.

Also, a two-meter penguin Genta was presented at the exhibition.
The exhibition will be open at the EC headquarters until December 22. It can be seen by the employees of the European Commission and their guests. Access to small groups of visitors is also possible by prior arrangement.
The exhibition in Brussels was organized by the National Antarctic Science Center with the support of the European Commission and the Delegation of Ukraine to the EU.
