The history of Odesa National University of Technology (ONTU) is a 123-year chronicle of uninterrupted engineering education, merging the legacy of past generations with a relentless pursuit of scientific innovation. The foundation of the institution was laid in 1888 through the initiative of the prominent grain industrialist Grigoriy Weinstein. From its early stages under the leadership of Professors V. S. Knabbe and V. G. Reisikh, the original flour milling school evolved into a powerful scientific center. During the interwar period, Professor K. A. Bohomaz, while heading the institute, ensured the establishment of the first specialized departments, which formed the bedrock of domestic grain processing science.
Despite the trials of repression—endured by leaders such as L. M. Landa, A. I. Trakhtenherz, A. L. Plyatkovskyi, and R. E. Veldum—and the challenging years of evacuation led by S. M. Zolotaryov, the university never ceased its research activities. In the post-war era, Professors P. M. Platonov and O. M. Dziadzio established the groundwork for the large-scale development of engineering schools. The subsequent reorganization by Professor V. F. Chaikovskyi and the strategic expansion under Professor M. D. Zakharov allowed the institute to attain the status of a national academy, becoming a hub for the development of cutting-edge food technologies.
The modern stage of ONTU’s development is marked by the strategic consolidation of Odesa’s leading educational and scientific assets. The 2012 merger with the Odesa State Academy of Refrigeration—led over the years by distinguished experts such as V. S. Martynovskyi, V. P. Alieksieiev, I. H. Chumak, V. V. Prytula, O. S. Titlov, and B. V. Kosyi—propelled the university into a global leadership position in the fields of cryogenic engineering and energy.
Today, ONTU’s scientific potential serves as its primary driving force. The university firmly maintains its status as a leading research center, where dozens of monographs and hundreds of textbooks are published annually. The high caliber of scientific achievement is evidenced by its state-of-the-art research laboratories and the publication of nine authoritative scientific journals. High citation indices in international databases, active participation in global grant programs, and ISO 9001:2015 certification attest to its international prestige. Furthermore, active membership in international organizations and student internships at leading foreign enterprises ensure a vital synergy between science and practice.
