Departmentof Public Health, Epidemiology and Ecology

The Department of Public Health was established on June 1, 2017 (the order of the Rector of the National Academy of Public Health, Academician Voronenko Yu. V. dated March 16, 2017, No. 1103) "by reorganization (merger) of the Department of Hygiene and Human Ecology, and The Department Food Hygiene and Hygiene of Children and Adolescents" aiming to train personnel for the public health system.

The prerequisites for the creation of the Department were: the introduction of systemic principles of public health in Ukraine, as provided for in Section 22 of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union; the creation of the State Institution “Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine” (Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated September 18, 2015 No. 604); approval of the Concept for the Development of the Public Health System (Order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated November 30, 2016 No. 1002-r) and the introduction of the specialty 229 “Public Health” (branch of knowledge “Health Care”) by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated February 1, 2017 No. 53 “On Amendments to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated April 29, 2015 No. 266”.

The Department is headed by Dr. Med. Sci., Professor Khomenko Iryna M.

The Department carries out educational, methodological, research, organizational, and educational work within the thematic areas of public health, epidemiology, laboratory studies of environmental factors, general hygiene, hygiene of children and adolescents, and food hygiene.

The Department is a graduate department on the Educational and Professional Program "Public Health" at the second (master's) level of higher education in the field of knowledge 22 "Health Care" in the specialty 229 "Public Health" (full-time/extramural(part-time) forms of study). The department trains higher education applicants in specialty 229 "Public Health" at the third (educational and scientific) level in the field of knowledge 22 "Health Care" (full-time day/full-time evening forms of study).

The Department provides training for specialists in the following specialties: "Epidemiology", "General Hygiene", "Laboratory Research of Environmental Factors", "Disinfection"; conducts advanced training of doctors in thematic improvement cycles "Public Health in Ukraine: Development Strategy", "Strategic Directions of Modern Preventive Medicine", "Fundamentals of Infection Control (for Doctors of Various Specialties)", "Modern Laboratory Research in the Public Health System", "Medical and Sanitary Support of Organized Childhood", "Nutrition of Children in Educational Institutions of Various Types", "Methods of Determining and Assessing the Physical Health of Children"; also provides training for interns and specialists of related disciplines in epidemiology.

The goal of the Department is to maintain its leading status in the training of public health specialists by taking into account the requests (and expectations) of users of educational and scientific services, stakeholders in Ukraine and abroad. One of the leading tasks of the practically-oriented direction of the educational process and scientific activities of the Department is to expand the possibilities of fruitful cooperation with various departments and sectors to preserve and strengthen the health and well-being of the country's population.

The Department's scientific research is aimed at methodological substantiation of the development of human resources, a modern model of epidemiological surveillance of infectious and non-infectious diseases, improving the advocacy component in the public health system of Ukraine, identifying environmental health problems, developing food safety measures, protecting the health of the population in the surveillance zones of nuclear power facilities, and developing a preventive direction in medicine.
