The Department of Nephrology of the Kyiv Institute for Advanced Medical Training (at that time) was established in 1994 by Order No. 351 of the Rector dated December 10. It was founded at the Institute of Urology and Nephrology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and the Main Military Hospital of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, as well as Children's Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Kyiv. The initiative came from Professor L.A. Pyrih, an academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the first freelance Chief Nephrologist of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (1979-1993), the first President of the Ukrainian Association of Nephrologists (1982-2005; Honorary President), an Honored Scientist of Ukraine (1992), and a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology (2009). At that time, he was the Deputy Director for Research and Head of the Department of Therapeutic Nephrology at the Institute of Urology and Nephrology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. He headed the department from 1994 to 2010 and continued working as a professor until his passing in 2021 at the age of 92. From 2010 to 2022, the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor D.D. Ivanov. Since 2011, the department has been renamed the Department of Nephrology and Renal Replacement Therapy. Since 2023, the department has been led by Honored Doctor of Ukraine, Professor S.V.
