Bio Michael Zgurovsky
Rector of National Technical University of Ukraine “Kiev Polytechnic Institute”.
Michael Zgurovsky was born on January 30, 1950 in the town of Skala-Podilska, Ternopil Region, Ukraine.
In 1969-1975 he was a student of Kiev Polytechnic Institute (KPI) specializing in technical cybernetics. On graduation he got a diploma (Master Degree) in Engineering, technical cybernetics. In 1975-1979 he was doing his research on optimal discrete control and defended the thesis obtaining Candidate of Sciences (PhD Degree) in Cybernetics.
From 1979 to 1992 he worked at Kiev Polytechnic Institute as a senior researcher and associate professor and after doing research in automatic design and optimal control of distributed parameter systems and obtaining the degree of Doctor of Sciences (1984) he was professor of technical cybernetics department of KPI.
Since 1992 Michael Zgurovsky is Rector of National Technical University of Ukraine “Kiev Polytechnic Institute”, now National Technical University of Ukraine ”Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”.
During 1994-1999 M. Zgurovsky was Minister of Education of Ukraine working out legislative basis of the education system of Ukraine, the general management of education on the national level.
Since 1998, M. Zgurovsky has been the founder and director, and since 2015, the scientific supervisor of the Institute for Applied System Analysis of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
Since 1995, Mikhail Zgurovsky has been a full member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, since 2011 a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and since 2022 a foreign corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
M. Zgurovsky is a well-known scientist in the field of mathematics and system analysis, he generalized basic notions of system analysis theory, formulated the fundamentals of system mathematics, proposed a new approach to the theory of extremal problems for non-linear operator, differential-operator equations and inclusions and variation inequalities in Banach space.
Axiomatic study was carried out for non-linear multi-valued mappings and in their terms the properties of resolving operators of systems consisting of operator and differential operator equations. The conditions of solubility and properties of extremal problems solutions were identified, their weak expansions and necessary optimality conditions in the form of variation inequalities were constructed, regularizations methods were developed and approximation schemes were validated.
Under the leadership of Academician Zgurovsky, the World Data Center for Geoinformatics and Sustainable Development (WDC-Ukraine) was created in the system of the International Science Council (ISC). WDC-Ukraine specializes in the field of geoinformatics in such disciplines as solid earth physics, solar physics, oceanography, as well as in the field of global modeling of sustainable development processes and assessment of the impact of global threats on people's safety and quality of life.
In 2006, on the initiative of M. Zgurovsky, the Parliament of Ukraine adopted a law on the creation of the Science Park of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, which became the central core of the innovation ecosystem "Sykorsky Challenge Ukraine". Academician Zgurovsky is the scientific director of this ecosystem. The mission of "Sykorsky Challenge Ukraine" is to provide an opportunity to create high-tech products, commercialize scientific research and carry out their industrial implementation and introduction to the markets of Ukraine and other countries of the world.
M. Zgurovsky is the author of more than 850 scientific works, including 44 books published in different countries; he made more than 50 inventions. The publications of M. Zgurovsky are devoted to the specified scientific problems and current problems of education, the role of scientists and engineers in society, and the social development of the country.
M. Zgurovsky is the Chairman of the Association of Rectors of Technical Universities of Ukraine, the Chairman of the Ukrainian Peace Council.
M. Zgurovsky is a senior member of the IEEE, a Ukrainian delegate to the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA, Paris, France), a national representative of Ukraine at the International Science Council (ISC, Paris, France).
M. Zgurovsky has state awards of Ukraine, Italy, Poland, Estonia, Vietnam, Japan, China and France. Three-time laureate of state prizes of the Ukrainian SSR (1990) and Ukraine (1999, 2005) in the field of science and technology, laureate of prizes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine named after V.M. Hlushkov (1994), V.S. Mikhalevich (2004) and S.O. Lebedev (2020), the prize of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for the development and implementation of innovative technologies (2022), awarded the title of Honored Scientist of Ukraine (2000).
