Ukrainian scientists will be involved in studying the potential spread of silicones in Antarctica, according to an agreement signed between the National Antarctic Scientific Center of the Ministry of Education and Science and Silicones Europe, a non-profit trade organization representing major silicone producers in Europe.

The focus will be on identifying cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes, a group of silicone fluids commonly used in cosmetic products such as shampoos, hair conditioners, deodorants, as well as in industrial products like chemical solvents and cleaning fluids.

Given the widespread use of these substances, it is crucial to assess their levels in the environment. Investigating whether they are present in Antarctica will help understand if these silicones are transported over large distances by air and water masses.

Under the project, samples will be collected in the Antarctic Peninsula and its vicinity (around the "Academic Vernadsky" station), including:

  1. Air, using special traps.
  2. Bottom sediments.
  3. Phytoplankton and krill in oceanic waters from the "Nosophere."
  4. Antarctic soils and mosses.

Similar research will also be conducted by participants in the Polish Antarctic Program near their "Arctowski" station.

All samples are planned to be sent to Norway in May, where scientists will analyze whether the specified silicone fluids are present and in what concentrations. Preliminary research results are expected by the end of 2024.

According to the agreement, Silicone Europe will purchase the necessary scientific equipment for the National Antarctic Scientific Center, enabling quality sample collection. Ukrainian scientists will gain valuable experience in international collaboration for the global goal of preventing pollution on our planet.
