On 14 October 2026, a meeting of the Working Group on Scientific and Environmental Cooperation of the NATO–Ukraine Council was held at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The meeting focused on scientific cooperation between Ukraine and NATO, the urgent needs of Ukraine’s research and innovation sectors, opportunities for international coordination, and prospects for NATO joining the International Coalition for Support of Science, Research and Innovation in Ukraine.

Discussions addressed opportunities to deepen cooperation under NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme.

The SPS Programme supports practical scientific cooperation between NATO member states and partner countries. It promotes research and technological development to address contemporary security challenges.

The meeting programme included representatives of NATO’s International Staff, including Pierce Cazalet, Director for Defence and Security Cooperation, and Eyüp Kuntay Turmuş, Head of NATO’s Science for Peace and Security Programme.

The Ukrainian side presented the current needs of the research sector and outlined key steps in its transformation. Particular attention was paid to Ukraine’s prospects for participating in international research initiatives and to mechanisms for supporting research projects.

Strengthening cooperation with NATO is an important priority of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine’s international activities. Presenting the strategy and discussing instruments for its implementation provide a foundation for continued dialogue on joint research, innovation development and strengthening Ukraine’s scientific and technological capacity.
