The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (MESU) has announced the results of the competitive selection of PhD research projects within the framework of the pilot project on doctoral training through project-based PhD education.

A total of 137 PhD research projects were submitted to the competition. Following the evaluation process, 79 projects received funding and support. The selected research covers a wide range of fields, including machine learning, advanced materials, biotechnology, environmental security, chemistry, physics, data science, and technologies supporting Ukraine’s recovery and defense capabilities.

Project-based PhD education represents a new model of doctoral training. Under this approach, a PhD candidate works not only on a dissertation but also on a specific research project with clearly defined objectives, a budget, a work plan, and expected outcomes.

This model is intended to strengthen the connection between doctoral education and real-world scientific challenges, as well as the needs of the state, national defense, economic development, and Ukraine’s recovery efforts.

The competition was conducted through the National Electronic Scientific Information System (URIS). Projects were evaluated based on scientific quality, relevance, originality, practical significance, potential for future application of results, and their expected contribution to Ukraine’s defense capacity and economic development.

In total, 137 projects were submitted. Following scientific and scientific-technical peer review, 79 projects were selected for support, representing 58% of all submitted proposals. The competition rate was approximately 1.7 applications per funded project.

The competition was open to higher education institutions and research organizations that successfully passed state attestation in the natural sciences and mathematics domain and meet the requirements for training PhD candidates.
